Skeleton Trivia for Friday, 2024-04-19
I’m suspicious of the site that claims the oldest team sport in the world is Rocket League
Hi Skeleton Crew,
Just a reminder that I’m plannin’ to send out some trivias tomorrow. Even though it’ll be Saturday!
Weekend work?? Ah jeez. I guess that’s what I get for forgettin’ to do my job on Wednesday!!
Answers to Last Time
Those leather shoes from South Africa I was askin’ ya ’bout are called veldskoens, or just vellies for short.
That movie with the Philip Glass soundtrack, the one Mr. Ron Fricke cinamatographed in 1982? That was Koyaanisqatsi, which is Hopi for “life outta balance”.
Today’s Questions
Question 1
Yesterday’s Q1—the veldskoen one—that was a tricky one! I knew it’d play hard ... but maybe it played a little too hard, since I don’t think ANYONE got it right, yikes-a-roo!1
A common answer was chukka—which, I’m not gonna lie, it was a real good guess, veldskoens are arguably a *type* a’ chukka. I really don’t think anyone’d fault ya much if they showed ya a picture a’ a veldskoen an’ ya accidentally IDed it as a chukka!
But so that all got me wonderin’: what’s up with that word chukka? I mean, where’d it come from?
Well, turns out folks mostly think it comes from the term (sometimes spelled chukker) used in what sport for a period a’ play—’round about seven minutes game time?2
Question 2
One a’ the best-known sequences from Koyaanisqatsi shows the 1972 demolition a’ the Pruitt–Igoe public housing projects:
That particular housin’ development was built in the early ’50s, designed by modernist architect Minoru Yamasaki. Mr. Yamasaki-san is probab’ly best known for designin’ what buildings that opened up right around the same time that Pruitt–Igoe was torn down?
OK then
Byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Close-but-no-cigar points to the person who guessed “veldtclog”, though!
Now, Wikipedia makes the claim that this sport’s the oldest team sport in the world. But if ya go ahead an’ follow the citations ... well, let’s just say I’m not so sure I agree 100% with their policework there. But y’know, honestly, even just the fact that some folks might think to claim this as the oldest team sport in the world ... even just THAT is maybe a kinda hint to the answer?? Or maybe not, I dunno. Figured I’d mention it here, at any rate.
